The Thread That Outlasts the Seam

Why This Material

There is a temptation to specify the strongest thread available. It is the wrong instinct. When a seam is stressed past its limit, something has to give, and a thread stronger than the fabric will hold while the fabric tears alongside it. A torn panel is a replacement; a broken seam is an afternoon's repair.

So the thread is specified to be strong enough to never fail in normal use, and weak enough to fail before the cloth does when use stops being normal.

Material Characteristics

• Bonded, so it resists unravelling where a seam is cut for alteration.
• Low stretch, which keeps a straight seam straight under load.
• Colour-stable across washing; it does not become the visible part of the seam.
• Fails cleanly at a point rather than fraying along a length.

Design Contribution

Because the failure mode is known, seams can be placed with repair in mind. Any seam that is expected to take load is sewn so that it can be opened and re-sewn without disturbing the panels on either side.

Testing Process

Seams were loaded to failure on sample cloth of the same weight used in production. What was recorded was not only the load at failure but which component failed — every test where the fabric gave before the thread was treated as a failed specification, not a strong result.

Applications

Used on every structural seam. Decorative topstitching uses the same thread at a heavier size, where the load case is different and failure is cosmetic rather than structural.

Maintenance

Nothing routine. If a seam opens, it has done what it was specified to do — re-sew it before the opening lengthens, and inspect the cloth on either side while it is open.
