Why This Material

Faster looms produce cloth that is even, and evenness is not the same as durability. A shuttle loom works at a fraction of the speed and produces a fabric with a slightly irregular tension across its width. That irregularity is what allows the cloth to move with wear rather than resist it until it fails at one point.

The weight was chosen against the same test. A lighter cloth is more comfortable on the first day and thinner at the elbow after two years. This one is the opposite on both counts.

Material Characteristics

• Stiff when new, and noticeably so — this is not a flaw to be finished away.
• Softens along the lines of actual use rather than uniformly.
• Fades at stress points first, which makes the wear legible as a record.
• Holds a crease taken deliberately; does not hold one taken by accident.

Design Contribution

Because the cloth is stiff at the start, the cut has to be drafted for how it will sit after it relaxes rather than how it sits on the table. Seams are placed where the fabric will want to fold anyway, so that the eventual creases follow the construction instead of fighting it.

Testing Process

Samples were washed and dried repeatedly, measured after each cycle, and abraded at the points that fail first in worn garments — the elbow, the seat, and the edge of the pocket. The measurements that mattered were the ones taken after the cloth stopped changing, not the ones taken while it was still settling.

Comparison

Applications

Used where the object is expected to be worn rather than kept: outer layers, and the panels of any piece that will take the weight of use. Not used for linings, where its stiffness has nothing to work against.

Maintenance

Wash rarely and cold. Dry flat and out of direct sun. Repair at the first thinning rather than the first hole — a patch on sound cloth lasts; a patch on a torn edge is a second repair waiting.
