Concept
The piece was designed backwards from how it would look after four years, not how it would photograph in its first week. Undyed cotton was chosen because it has nowhere to fade to — what it does instead is settle, and settling is legible as age rather than as wear.
Nothing on the outside identifies the maker. The identification lives in the archive record, which is this page, and on the unit's own registry entry.
Design Philosophy
Three constraints were fixed before the first sample and never relaxed:
- The garment must hold its shape without interfacing, which sets the minimum weight of the cloth.
- Every seam that carries load must be flat-felled, because a serged seam is a repair waiting to be refused.
- The hardware must be replaceable with tools a person already owns.
The third constraint removed several options that were otherwise better. That was the intended effect. A piece that can only be repaired by the people who made it is not built to outlast them.
