The Letter

By the time you read this, a great many arguments will have been settled in ways you will never see.

You will not know that the card in your hands is the fourth version, or that the first three explained too much. You will not know how long the clasp took, or that the number stamped on the piece is printed at its natural length because padding it to four digits made the edition feel larger than it is.

None of that is information you need. An object should not arrive asking for credit for its own decisions.

But there is one thing worth saying plainly, because it changes how the rest of this works.

This piece is numbered, and the number means something specific: it is a position in a record that is kept. Not a marketing device, not a suggestion of scarcity — an entry in an archive that will still exist when this box is long thrown away. If you ever want to know what was made alongside it, what it replaced, or what was rejected on the way to it, that is written down and it is meant to be readable by you.

We have tried to build the record before building the audience for it, which is the wrong order commercially and the only order that produces something honest. It means the archive currently documents a great deal for very few people. That is fine. It was always going to be either that or a record assembled backwards later, and a record assembled backwards is not a record.

The other thing: this will not be the best version of this object. It is the first one, and the first one is the one where the most is still unknown. Later pieces will be better in ways that are already visible from here. That is not a reason to hold this one at arm's length — it is the reason to keep it, because it is the only piece that will ever show where the line started.
