A Repair Left Visible

A mended object in a museum case, catalogued for the ceramic and remembered for the seam.

Background

The piece is domestic, unremarkable, and about two hundred years old. It broke at some point in its first century and was repaired by someone whose name is not recorded, using a method that made no attempt to hide what had happened.

The catalogue card describes the form, the glaze, and the probable region. The repair is mentioned in the last line, as a condition note.

What Caught Our Attention

Everyone in the room walked past the intact objects and stopped at this one.

Not because the repair is beautiful — it is competent rather than beautiful — but because it is the only object in the case that tells you anything about the two hundred years. The rest are frozen at the moment they left the kiln. This one has a life in it.

The second thing, which took longer to notice: the repair is what makes the original form legible. You can see how the piece was made because you can see how it came apart.

How It Influences CHAPELLIA

It settled an argument that had been running here for months about whether a numbered edition should show its wear or resist it.

The answer we took from the case is that resisting wear is a promise nobody can keep, and that an object which cannot age gracefully has only one good year in it. So the finish specification was rewritten around how the material looks after three years of handling, not after none.

It also changed how the physical archive is kept. Rejected versions used to be stored to be forgotten. They are now stored to be shown, in sequence, because the sequence is the part that explains the object.

Key Takeaways

  • An object that hides its history has less to say than one that carries it.
  • Damage that has been answered honestly reads as care; damage that has been concealed reads as a defect discovered late.
  • Specify a finish for the third year, not the first.
  • The archive is not a store of failures. It is the explanation of the thing that succeeded.
The repair was made by someone who assumed the object would outlive them and would be handled by people they would never meet. That assumption is visible in every decision they made, and it is the assumption we have been the slowest to adopt.
Inspiration Notes
Photographed only through the case glass, so the images are poor and are kept anyway. The catalogue reference is recorded in the physical archive. No attribution is claimed for the repair — the maker is genuinely unknown.
