Designing a Number
The Design Challenge
The number has to be readable at the size of a fingernail, has to survive being stamped rather than printed, and has to look correct at 007 and at 1240 without being redrawn.
It also has to feel like a record rather than a serial. A serial number says this is one of many identical things. An edition number says this is a specific one of a known set. The digits are the same; the impression is not.
Exploration
The first direction was a typeface already in use elsewhere in the brand. It failed on the second constraint immediately — stamping thickens every stroke, and a face with fine strokes turns to mud at that size.
The second direction was a monospaced face, which handles 007 and 1240 without any spacing work at all. It read as inventory. Correct, cold, and wrong.
The third direction stopped looking for a typeface and started looking at ledgers, where numbers are written to be found later by someone who is not the person who wrote them. Those numbers are wide, slightly heavy, and generously spaced — proportions chosen for retrieval rather than for looking.
Iterations
Eleven, of which four mattered.
Version three set the digit width and the weight, and both survived to the end.
Version six introduced a leading zero convention that was later reversed. Padding to four digits made 0007 look like a batch code and made the edition feel larger than it is. The number is now printed at its natural length.
Version eight changed only the spacing between digits, by a fraction that cannot be described without the two samples side by side, and is the single change most people notice without being able to name.
Version eleven removed the last decorative element — a hairline rule beneath the digits — which had been there since version one and had never once been questioned.
Final Direction
Wide digits, medium weight, natural length, generous spacing, no rule. Stamped rather than printed, at a depth specified as a range because the material varies.
The zero is drawn without a slash or a dot. Both were tried. Both are more precise and both look like a machine wrote them.
Design Principles Applied
The principle that decided most of it: specify for the worst case, judge on the typical case. The worst case is a four-digit number stamped into the least forgiving material. The typical case is three digits in the usual one. A design tuned only for the typical case fails visibly a few hundred pieces in.
The second: anything that has never been questioned should be questioned once. The hairline rule survived ten versions on inheritance alone.
