The Run That Was Never Finished
Historical Context
Scarcity in this industry is usually manufactured, and everybody knows it, which has made genuine scarcity difficult to describe without sounding like the manufactured kind.
The convention is to announce a limited run, produce it, and let the limit do the work. The limit is chosen for effect. Nothing about it is discovered.
This run was not that, and the difficulty of proving so is most of what this entry is about.
The Story
Twenty-four were planned against a material that had been secured in a quantity sufficient for twenty-four, with the usual margin.
The margin turned out to be wrong because the material behaved differently at the eleventh piece than at the first — a batch variation in the raw stock that was within the supplier's stated tolerance and outside what the process could absorb. Yield collapsed. Nine pieces reached completion at the standard required.
The remaining material was not sufficient, at the achieved yield, to reach even a round number.
Turning Point
The decision point was whether to make up the difference with a substitute material and complete the run.
It would have been defensible. The substitute was good, arguably better in some respects, and no owner would have been able to tell without being told.
What settled it was the record. A run of twenty-four in which pieces one through nine and ten through twenty-four are materially different is not a run of twenty-four; it is two runs sharing a name, and the archive would have carried that lie permanently in exchange for a temporary convenience.
The run was closed at nine and the reason was written into the record for all nine.
Why It Became Rare
It became rare because a supplier's tolerance and our process did not agree, and because closing early was cheaper than lying.
That is the entire mechanism. There is no story about deliberate restraint, no curated edition size, nothing chosen for effect. The number nine has no meaning at all beyond being where the material ran out.
Which is, in practice, impossible to communicate. Every owner of one of the nine has been asked whether it was a special edition, and the true answer sounds evasive.
