Nine Millimetres
The Idea
The original margin was twelve millimetres because twelve was the number in the reference, and the reference was a piece nobody involved particularly admired.
Nothing was wrong with it. That was the problem — it was a correct margin, on a correct object, and the whole thing read as competent.
Design Journey
The change was found by accident during a photography session, when a piece was cropped tighter than intended and the proof looked better than the object.
Reducing the margin narrows the field the eye reads as empty, which makes the material feel more deliberate and less like background. Below about eight millimetres the effect reverses and the piece looks crowded. Nine held.
Three millimetres is not a design decision anybody would defend in a meeting. It is only defensible with the two versions side by side, which is why the comparison sample still exists.
Why It Matters
Proportion is the part of a design that survives translation into every other medium. The material can be substituted, the colour can shift under different light, the hardware can be revised — the proportions carry through all of it, and they are what people recognise from across a room without knowing what they are recognising.
It is also the cheapest thing to get right and the most expensive to fix, because by the time it is wrong everything has been tooled around it.
Hidden Details
The nine millimetres is not uniform. The lower margin runs a fraction wider than the upper, a convention borrowed from book typesetting, where an optically centred block sits slightly above true centre.
Measured, it is asymmetrical. Looked at, it is centred. The measurement is not the thing being designed.
