Story #001

What Survives a Decade

Ten years is long enough for the reasons a thing was made to stop being available, and short enough that the thing itself is usually still here.

The Question

If an object outlasts every explanation attached to it, what exactly has been preserved?

The question is not rhetorical. Museums answer it one way, families answer it another, and most manufacturers never have to answer it at all because nothing they make gets far enough to raise it.

Exploration

Start with what actually disappears first. Not the object — the object is usually the most durable part. What goes is the context: why this material, why this size, who it was for, what it cost at the time, what it was competing against.

Within a decade, most of that is gone even when the piece is in excellent condition. Within two, the people who could have supplied it from memory are no longer being asked.

What remains is an object that is clearly deliberate, with the deliberation now unreadable. That is the ordinary fate of well-made things, and it is a quieter loss than damage because nothing looks wrong.

Perspective

Seen from the object's side, this is not tragic. A piece does not need its reasons to keep working.

Seen from the next owner's side, it is the difference between inheriting something and inheriting something particular. The first is a possession. The second is a position in a sequence — and only one of those is worth being careful with.

The distinction is not sentimental. It changes behaviour. Things whose history is legible get repaired; things whose history is blank get replaced.

Lessons

Recording context is cheaper at the moment of making than at any point afterwards, and the gap widens every year.

It also has to be recorded somewhere that does not require interpretation. A note that says the third revision, after the shoulder was narrowed is worth more in ten years than a photograph, because the photograph will not say what changed.

Most of what survives well was written down casually by someone who did not think it was important.

Connection To CHAPELLIA

This is the reason the record is issued with the piece rather than about it, and the reason a transfer of ownership adds a line instead of overwriting one.

Neither decision makes the object better. Both make it legible to someone who was not there — which, given enough time, is everyone.

What survives a decade is rarely the thing anyone set out to preserve. It is whatever happened to be written down at the time, by someone who assumed they would remember anyway.
Archive Notes
Filed under Permanence. Written as a standing reference for how context is recorded at the point of making, and revised once since first entry.
