Character Stories
Story #001

The First Character Sheet

The first sheet was drawn to answer a question about a jacket, and ended up deciding how every figure in the collection would be built afterwards.

The Beginning

It began as a technical drawing, not a character. The question was how a particular collar would sit on an actual body rather than on a flat pattern, and the fastest way to answer it was to draw somebody wearing it.

The figure was meant to be disposable. It was drawn quickly, without a face, because a face would have taken time and the question was about the collar.

The drawing was kept. The collar was abandoned.

The Philosophy

What made the sheet worth keeping was the absence, not the presence.

A figure with no face cannot be aspirational in the usual way — there is nobody to want to be. What is left is posture, proportion, and the way the material falls, which is all the information the piece actually needs to carry.

The decision that followed was to make that permanent: figures in this collection are defined by what they wear, how they stand, and what they carry. Never by expression. A face invites the viewer to read a mood and stop there.

Design Journey

Holding to that turned out to be harder than declaring it.

Every subsequent sheet drifted toward a face. Not a drawn one — a suggested one, through the angle of a head or the tilt of a shoulder, and each time the figure became a person and the garment became a costume.

The correction was mechanical in the end: the head is drawn last, after the material is fully resolved, and only at an angle where the face could not be seen even if it were drawn. Doing it in that order removed the temptation rather than resisting it.

The Symbols

Each figure carries exactly one object that is not clothing. One, never two.

The rule exists because two objects start a narrative — the viewer builds a relationship between them and the figure becomes a scene. One object stays a fact about the person.

What the object is matters less than that it is worn rather than held. Held things get put down; worn things are part of the figure's account of themselves.

Connection to The Collection

The character sheets are not marketing images and were never used as any. They are the reference the pieces are checked against.

When a design is finished, it is drawn onto a figure before it is approved. Anything that only works flat, or only works photographed, fails there — which has happened, and which is the reason the step still exists.

That first sheet is still the reference for how every figure is built, and it was drawn to answer a question about a collar that was never made. The useful part of the work is rarely the part that was commissioned.
Archive Notes
The original sheet is held unframed and unrestored, including the abandoned collar in the upper margin. Removing it was discussed once and refused.
